Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management
This program is designed for students with little or no background in the discipline or those wishing to upgrade their existing knowledge in the field. No prior knowledge is assumed. The Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management is designed to provide an introduction to this discipline.
Career opportunites include human resource practitioner or general management.
Human resource practitioner but also suits general management
Applicants must have a recognised Diploma or a recognised Certificate and two years work experience; or ten years work experience; or successfully completed 20 units of postgraduate University of Newcastle studies and two years work experience.
International applicants must also satisfy the University's English Language Requirements.
International students will be supported by the University and the Newcastle Business School's current support mechanisms. There will be a requirement for a minimum 6.5 IELTS result or equivalent.
This program has been redesigned with international students in mind. Articulation into the program will be easier for them. One of the assignments in a prescribed course is geared towards them writing a position paper on various HR issues in their own countries.
International students will be supported by the University and the Newcastle Graduate School of Business current support mechanisms. There will be a requirement for a minimum 6.5 IELTS result or equivalent.
Students studying offshore will be supported by staff travelling overseas to approved locations to provide intensive face to face instruction. Staff will also be in contact via email.
Domestic students with a disability or chronic illness will have their needs met by the NBS in liaison with the Student Support Unit.
Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students will draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Higher Education Centre, Umulliko.
Students from rural and isolated areas and those from socio-economically disadvantaged backgrounds will e supported through existing University support structures.
Students with special needs should not find it problematic studying on this program. GSBS6192 Strategic Human Resource Management includes a computer simulation but depending on the student need, teaching staff should be able to accommodate most people.

The Newcastle Business Schools runs courses on a trimester system, i.e. three terms per year. Students may commence studies in January, May or September. Please check term dates on the University website at: www.newcastle.edu.au/dates/.
The Graduate Certificate in Human Resource Management requires 40 units, gained through the completion of four courses each worth 10 units. Students are required to complete the three core courses (30 units) and one course (10 units) from the directed courses.
1. The Faculty has identified equivalent courses which are available at: http://www.newcastle.edu.au/Resources/Faculties/Faculty of Business and Law/Resources/Students/2011/2012-FBL-PG-Course-Equivalences261011.pdf . Current students will be advised to enrol in equivalent courses in lieu of relevant courses that will no longer be offered.
2. The Assistant Academic Registrar will write to all students who commenced study under the current program, advising of the transition arrangements, the equivalent courses and a program of study for completion. A Program Officer will be assigned to provide advice on transition arrangements.
3. Those areas where equivalent courses are not available in the redesigned course structure then the relevant current courses will be offered for up to two years.
4. All students enrolling in Term 1 2012 will study under the revised structure.
5. The transition arrangements will expire on 31 December 2013.
