Master of Environmental & Business Management

The Master of Environmental and Business Management program provides professional development in the areas of environmental management, sustainability and business management. With the growth in importance of environmental management as part of business requirements, a greater number of people in the near future will require a combination of environmental and business skills.

The program offers a wide range of business management courses of interest to students from diverse backgrounds. Applications are encouraged from candidates with a wide range of science, natural resource, engineering and business backgrounds.

With a growth in the importance of environmental management as part of business requirements, more and more people will need to improve their 'green' credentials. The Master of Environmental and Business Management provides students with a unique combination of skills that are useful for enhancing promotion, building a new set of marketable skills, or for moving career path. The growing importance of business and environmental management skills at all levels of employment will continue to make this degree attractive whether the student is working for NGOs, government or the private sector.

Applications for admission are assessed initially on the basis of a relevant undergraduate degree with a minimum GPA of 4.0. The degree, or the major undertaken in that degree, needs to be in one of the following areas:

• Conservation Studies
• Environmental rehabilitation studies
• Forestry
• Geography (human and physical)
• Marine
• Resources and environmental management
• Policy studies
• Social ecology
• Environmental Studies
• Urban and regional planning
• Management

If you do not satisfy these criteria you are still encouraged to apply. Your application will be assessed on the basis of "admission points" as described in the Additional Selection Criteria. The Master of Environmental and Business Management requires 100 admission points.

Credit may be granted for coursework courses if they can be demonstrated to be directly equivalent in terms of content and depth of study to the corresponding courses in the Environmental & Business Management program, and they were completed within the previous 5 years. Credit will be granted by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science and IT in accordance with the Rules Governing Postgraduate Coursework Awards.

Students who have satisfactorily completed the specified units of the Graduate Certificate in Environmental & Business Management program may apply for admission to the Master of Environmental & Business Management program.

International students are advised that this program is now only available on-line. International students must comply with the University of Newcastle's English language proficiency requirements. Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander students can draw on the assistance and support provided by the Indigenous Student Support and Development service through the Wollotuka Institute.

The program can be completed over one year of full-time study or longer if preferred. Courses are offered in trimester mode.

The Masters Program comprises eight courses with a total of 80 units. The coursework consists of five Core (compulsory) courses (50 units) and three specialisation courses from Group A (30 units).

Students who commenced the program prior to 2012 and have:

• successfully completed GECO6410, GSBS6010,GSBS6020, GSBS6021, GSBS6040, GSBS6130, GEBU6010 or GEBU6490 may count them towards the Group A Directed Course List.
• failed GECO6410, GSBS6010, GSBS6020, GSBS6021, GSBS6040, GSBS6130, GEBU6010 or GEBU6490 may enrol in an alternative course from the Group A Directed Course List.
