Master of Science Management

The Master of Science Management is an important new program, unique in Australia, that provides an understanding of critical science issues that are shaping our future, and how to respond to these within a professional environment. The program offers a focused but very flexible combination of studies in management, administration and science, and is aimed at strategic-level management professionals or anybody else who needs to have the skills and expertise to think critically, understand contemporary science issues relevant to their professional interest, and develop and manage science-based solutions.

The program is fully on-line and therefore students can proceed at their own pace, taking a compulsory course in project management, then choices of courses dealing with science management and with critical contemporary issues in science. Graduate will be eligible to apply for accreditation with the Australian Institute of Management.

The program offered exit options into either a Graduate Certificate of Science Management or a Graduate Certificate in Science.

The Master of Science Management program is truly unique. Designed around the contemporary needs of science, it will give you a real understanding of the key issues affecting government, society and the broader economy today. Taught by scientists with international research reputations, you'll acquire critical thinking and analysis skills. By combining these transferable skills with an international perspective, you'll be in high demand across a wide range of industries and organisations.

Students will be drawn from government agencies and science-based industries, or from individuals seeking employment in those areas. Graduates will have enhanced employment and career progression opportunities in government agencies (eg. CSIRO, Co-operative Research Centres and Environmental and Regulatory Agencies) where science-based processes and project management are required and in industries where there is an emphasis on science-based R&D, or on the application of science in production and consulting.

Applications for admission are initially assessed on the basis of an undergraduate degree but, for those who fall outside this criterion, applications will be assessed on the basis of "admissions points" as described in the Additional Selection Criteria. The Master of Science Management requires 100 admission points. Those applicants who score 60 points will be offered a place in the Graduate Certificate in Science Management.

Credit may be granted for coursework courses if they can be demonstrated to be directly equivalent in terms of content and depth of study to the corresponding courses in the Science Management program, and they were completed within the previous 5 years.

Credit will be granted by the Pro Vice-Chancellor of the Faculty of Science and IT in accordance with the Rules Governing Postgraduate Coursework Programs.

Discussions are ongoing with the Australian Institute of Project Management.

International students can only study this program online and must comply with the University's English Language proficiency requirements before an application is accepted.

The program can be completed over one year full-time or equivalent part-time. Courses are offered online on a trimester basis. Students may commence studies in January, May or August. The program requires the completion of 80 units of courses comprising a 10 unit core, 20 units of Group A courses, 30 units of Group B courses and 20 units of electives which can be chosen from any unrestricted postgraduate course offered by the University of Newcastle.

Students who commenced the program prior to 2012 and have:

• successfully completed GSBS6020 will be able to count it as a directed course toward their program.
• failed GSBS6020 or have not yet completed it, may enrol in GSBS6004.
